Hike in Söderåsens National Park

For arrival week in Lund the International Office had organised a couple of trips so people could get to know each other. Unfortunately I had to miss quite a few because of my exams, so once they were over I signed up for a hike to Söderåsen National Park (typically I chose the week of heavy snowfall and high winds).

Söderåsen National Park stretches over 1,625 hectares and encompasses deciduous forests, mountains, rivers and panoramic views. They have some lovely pictures of the park in spring on the website (http://www.soderasensnationalpark.se/En/Pages/default.aspx), when everything looks green and luscious! When I went the whole place was covered in snow, it was like walking through Lapland and it looked magical. The photos may be a bit repetitive (once you have seen one snow covered tree you have seen them all), but it was a fun day out and good to meet some new people.

I ended up walking with Lisa, an Austrian girl who lives in my flat and two new people I met on the walk, Georgia (a radiography student and fellow Brit) and Katarina (an Australian with Swedish heritage who is studying Swedish)

Georgia, Katarina, Lisa and me (looking scruffy as per usual!)

Everyone I have met here has been really lovely and friendly. It has been so interesting to meet people from all over the world and hear what made them chose to come and study in a cold little city in Sweden.

Georgia and I looking pretty cold and pink faced!

Being short is definitely a problem in heavy snow! Even though I was wearing walking boots I ended up with snow all down the inside of my shoes and soaking wet socks when I got home.

The hike was fun but exhausting, especially when the wind picked up and it felt like -100 degrees! It was bliss to get back on the nice warm bus, have a nap and come home to make some hot vegetable soup.
